The 2016 Convention will have an unmatched technical program featuring a wide array of topics and speakers. Over 90 presentations will be made throughout the four days of the convention in three concurrent tracks.

Keynote Presentation – Confronting Complexity and Building Resilience – 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Monarch Regency Ballroom

The opening keynote speaker will be the Mayor of Christchurch, Lianne Dalziel. Mayor Dalziel has served in a number of important roles in the post-disaster environment in Christchurch since its 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, including as a Member of Parliament and as the city’s leader.

Lianne will address the theme of ‘Confronting complexity and building resilience’.  She will discuss how we can better work together both in responding to and recovering from a disaster and in navigating the highly complex environment of the rebuild and regeneration that follows.  There is a saying that “the wisdom of the community always exceeds the knowledge of the experts”.  Lianne says her experience is that the wisdom of the community combined with the knowledge of the experts always exceeds what one can do without the other. Collaboration is vital to building community resilience.

Plenary Session – Learning from Recent Earthquakes & Improving Seismic Resilience – 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

An invited group of notable engineers from around the Pacific will share their experiences, current research and thoughts on how our profession can better address the challenges associated with improving the seismic resilience of our communities. Our plenary speakers include: Professor Masayoshi Nakashima (Kyoto University), Professor Juan Carlos de la Llera Martin (PUC Engineering, Chile) and David Bonowitz, S.E.
